Massage Techniques
Swedish Massage

A vigorous system of treatment, Swedish Massage is designed to energize the
body by stimulating circulation. Five basic strokes, all flowing toward the
heart, are used to manipulate the soft tissues of the body. This technique
uses a combination of kneading, rolling, vibrational, percussive and tapping
movements with the application of oil, lotion or cream to reduce friction on
the skin. The many benefits of Swedish massage may include generalized
relaxation, dissolution of scar tissue adhesions, and improved circulation,
which may speed healing and reduce swelling from injury.
Myofascial Release

This modality uses both direct and indirect techniques to release muscle
tension via the connective tissue, or "fascia".
Fascia is a thin tissue that covers all the organs of the body. This tissue
covers every muscle and every fiber within each muscle comprising a
myofascial unit. When muscle fibers are injured, the fibers and the fascia
which surrounds it become shortened and taut. This uneven stress can be
transmitted through the fascia to other parts of the body, referring pain
and a variety of other symptoms in areas you often wouldn't expect.
Myofascial Release treats these symptoms by releasing the uneven tightness
in injured fascia. The direct method uses deep pressure and muscle
stripping to release connective tissue. This direct pressure causes the
crystalline structure of the fascia tissues to liquefy and release. The
indirect method uses jostling, shaking and vibration to release the fascia's
crystalline structure, similar to the way that the vibration of certain
frequencies can shatter a crystal glass.
Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral work is a subtle, yet powerful vehicle which uses the sacrum
and cranial bones as "handles" on the nervous system. The central nervous
system is surrounded by a dense layer of connective tissue, and is bathed in
a fluid which both brings nutrients to and removes toxins and wastes from
the nervous tissue. The surrounding connective tissue (through tension or
trauma) often develops kinks which restrict the flow of the cerebro-spinal
fluid and inhibit efficient functioning of the brain and spinal nerves. By
tapping into the rhythm of this cerebro-spinal fluid and allowing your body
to release restrictions in the spinal column, Craniosacral therapy
facilitates muscle relaxation as the nerves that effect them are released.
As the central nervous system is engaged, many levels of relaxation are
achieved.
